Early Signs of Labour

More articles

Am I in labour? The Early Signs of Labour can be lengthy, so Ugandan mothers should stay calm when noticing pre-labour signs. Early contractions may be irregular, but as they become more regular and develop a pattern, it’s generally time to seek guidance. This stage varies for each woman, so contractions may continue for some time before you’re advised to head to the triage unit. In early labour, you may experience:

  • A show, where the mucus plug sealing your cervix comes away
  • Your waters breaking

When you think labour is starting, contact your midwife or hospital. They’ll ask about contraction timings and any other symptoms. If your waters break, always call them immediately. They’ll guide you on the signs and when it’s time to come in.

Signs of slow labour

Labour can progress quickly for some and slowly for others. If labour slows significantly, assistance may be required. Hospitals may define “slow labour” differently, but a primary indicator is a cervical dilation rate of less than 0.5cm per hour over four hours.

Rest assured, your midwife is well-versed in recognizing slow labour signs and will frequently check your progress. If necessary, they’ll discuss options with you and the doctor to determine the best course for you and your baby.

Common symptoms in early labour for Ugandan mothers may include:

  • Contractions
  • Backache
  • Pressure or the urge to go to the toilet (caused by the baby’s head pressing on the bowel)
